Editing with Transifex

This is probably the easiest method unless you're an experienced translator:

  • Go to the aCal project on Transifex and create yourself an account.
  • Request to join a translation team for your chosen language, or to start a new one if there isn't one already.
  • Start translating strings in your language of choice.

Just in case you were wondering, there are some stats over to the right showing what languages are up to date and what ones need work.

Building aCal with your Translation

Since xgettext does not natively understand the strings.xml format of Android we have a few minor hoops to jump through in order to use for translations...

You can follow these steps to rebuild aCal with your new strings:

  1. Put your translations into the 'po' folder of aCal as 'de.po' or 'es_ES.po' and so forth.
  2. In the 'po' folder (yes, cd to the folder first :-), run:
    ./ build
  3. In Eclipse highlight your strings file in (e.g.) res/values-de/strings.xml and press <F5> to refresh it.
  4. Press Ctrl+F11 to build and upload your new app to your phone.

Extracting strings.xml to messages.po

If you're actually modifying aCal to add new strings, you need to use the script to extract them before you can translate them properly, as follows:

  1. In the 'po' folder (yes, cd to the folder first :-), run:
    ./ extract
  2. Perform some arcane magic with mergetool to merge the new strings into your existing translation.
